Character & Canon: Jonouchi Katsuya, Yu-Gi-Oh! Duelist
District: Orlea

Personality:
Friendship is, perhaps, the single most important thing to Jonouchi's character. Friendship is what gave Jonouchi a substantial amount of character development in the shortest period of time. At first, he would bully Yuugi because Yuugi was incapable of defending himself, and was often a pushover. It was these traits that annoyed him to the point where he felt the need to "man" Yuugi up. However, this train of thought was short-lived when Yuugi stood up to Ushio (the hall monitor of their school) in front of Jonouchi and Honda when Ushio beat them for bullying Yuugi. It was this perspective that started to change Jonouchi's opinion about Yuugi. Even though Yuugi wished for friends who would never betray him/he would never betray, Jonouchi initiated the friendship before he completed the puzzle and before Yuugi’s wish came true. Thus their friendship was not an immediate result of the millennium puzzle. (Although it did play a factor of instigating the start of their unity.) Their friendship was initially triggered when Yuugi stood up for Jonouchi even though Jonouchi treated him poorly.

Jonouchi spends a lot of time struggling throughout the series, and while he does falter from time to time, he is known for his aggressive determination. This is expressed through each of his duels when no matter how hopeless his situation seems Jonouchi must absolutely pull through. Of course this determination must require a drive in order for him to push himself as hard as he does. During duelist Kingdom his drive was to win the prize money for his sister's eye surgery, and during Battle City it was to earn the right to duel Yuugi and be his equal as a duelist. When trying to rescue Mai, during his shadow game duel with Marik, Jonouchi never gave up. Even after being hit with Ra's attack, which should have killed him, he stood his ground. He could have won the duel too had he hold on just a little longer (eventually resulting to him falling victim to heart failure and dying. The only thing keeping him alive was by a machine at the time. Determination prevailed yet again when he came out of his comatose state (after helping Yuugi have faith in his duel) when he should have remained that way.
He is incredibly passionate when it comes to things within his interest, such as likes, hobbies, and friends. One of the best examples is his enthusiasm to play duel monsters against challengers. Since the start of the arc, he has improved drastically and is considered the third best duelist. Jonouchi is also a selfless, supportive friend. He will do practically anything for the people he cares about, even if they don't ask him. When Haga tossed Yuugi's Exodia cards into the ocean, Jonouchi hopped in after them without a second thought (though he was only able to retrieve two of the five.) In battle city, when he was brainwashed and forced to duel his best friend, he eventually came out of the mind control (inflicting himself in the process) to free Yuugi from the anchor that would cause him to drown, causing him to nearly drown in the process. During Mai's duel with other Marik in her shadow duel, she was a risk of getting a direct attack from the god card Ra (in her current mental state, it would have killed her.) Instead, Jonouchi risked getting hit in order to try to free her from the shadow game (to no avail, sadly.) When she fell into and potentially permanent unconsciousness to the shadow realm Jonouchi vowed to defeat Marik and free her. This rivaled with his other promise of dueling Yuugi at the Battle City tournament finals. While he hates (and refuses) to break promises, he made the exception.

Jonouchi hates owing people favors, and will usually tend to repay them as quickly as possible. So if someone helped him, for whatever reason (like Yuugi with the prize money and winning back his Red-Eyes Black Dragon, or Kaiba giving him the handcuff key to prevent him from drowning) he will do his best to even things out.

Questions/Comments/Concerns:
He is from the manga, which is technically a different universe from the anime and should not be considered the same verse.
